REFLECTIONS: IT’S ALL ABOUT THE ARTS

“Look Within”

That’s the theme for the 2019-2020 Reflections Art Program which has been bringing the arts to life for more than 10 million students since 1969. And California State PTA and its members, families and kids are on the forefront of this amazing program, which increases community awareness of the importance of arts in education.

Reflections encourages students of all ages to:

  • Unleash creative talents and be inspired
  • Express themselves imaginatively in their artwork
  • Experience the fun and joy of making art
  • Tap into critical-thinking skills to create art inspired by the annual theme
  • Receive positive recognition for their original works of art.

PARTICIPATION IS EASY, EXCITING AND EMPOWERING

All students attending PTA schools sponsoring the program are invited to participate and submit original artwork in one of six areas:

  • Dance Choreography
  • Literature
  • Photography
  • Film Production
  • Music Composition
  • Visual Arts.

Artworks are submitted first to school-level PTAs, where they are first recognized, celebrated and judged by five grade-level divisions, while a non-judged Special Artists division celebrates student artists with special needs. School PTAs then choose a selection of entries to be judged by local PTA units, which are then sent on to councils and then districts for consideration. The final artworks submitted to California State PTA by districts are then considered for Outstanding Interpretation, Awards of Excellence or Awards of Merit. Outstanding Interpretation and Award of Excellence entries then go on to represent California in the final National PTA judging round.

State-level Outstanding Interpretation honorees receive:

  • Onstage recognition at the California State PTA Annual Convention
  • The opportunity to showcase their artwork at the California State PTA Convention Reflections Gallery
  • Prizes including an Outstanding Interpretation plaque, award and certificate

State-level Award of Excellence honorees receive:

  • The opportunity to showcase their artwork at the California State PTA Convention Reflections Gallery
  • Prizes including an Award of Excellence medallion, award and certificate

State-level Award of Merit honorees receive:

  • The opportunity to showcase their artwork at the California State PTA Convention Reflections Gallery
  • Prizes including an Award of Merit medallion and certificate

National-level Outstanding Interpretation honorees are recognized at the National PTA Convention, plus their artwork, along with any National Award of Excellence and Merit winners, are featured in Reflections’ popular traveling national exhibit.

Sinaloa Middle School Deadline to enter is October 15, 2019.

Entry forms and information are available on the PTSA webpage:

We are out the gate and running on our big fundraising effort for the year. We are partnering with Step It Up! to engage students in fun activities while also generating money for our students. Every dollar earned goes to ASB, where students, working with school leadership, help determine what field trips, activities, and new innovations we can bring to the school. Some ideas have included a 7th grade field trip, new, poster-styled digital announcement boards, and supplies and resources for various clubs and student groups! All of this is possible with a strong effort in our fundraising. This year, we have set goals for the whole campus that lead up to and include me, the principal, being taped to the flagpole for morning announcements, riding a small tricycle around campus, and other fun hi-jinx and silliness to reward students and contribute to a welcoming, positive school environment. Please check with your child to see how you can help them and all students achieve with our Step It Up! fundraiser!

On a less fun, but very important note, please do remember to drive cautiously through our parking lot and around our campus on Royal Avenue. Please also do your best to comply with requests from administrative and supervisory staff; by working together, we can keep our parking lot smooth and safe for all before and after school. Note: state law indicates that parking a red zone is not allowed, and it is neither legal nor advisable to stop, much less drop off students, on Royal Avenue. If the front parking lot creates stress or does not work for your family, kindly consider picking up and dropping of students at the northwest and northeast corners of the campus, accessible by the adjacent church parking lot and nearby neighborhood streets, respectively.

As always, please check our website for updates and information about what is happening in our community and at our school! Thank you for being a part of the Saber family!

Kindly,
Bradley Torti, Principal
Sinaloa Middle School

This Tuesday, our site will be kicking off our annual Sinaloa ASB fundrasier! This fundraiser is easy to participate in and helps us pay for many of the exciting events, field trips, and programs on campus. Leadership and student representatives in our school assembly have a great deal of decision-making power in how these funds are spent, so the more we are able to raise, the more empowered our students will be to bring new programs and events to campus.

Note also this week we will have a structured lockdown on Thursday. This is part of our ongoing effort to maximize student safety on campus. It is important for us to practice our protocols and make sure that our many new students are comfortable with our procedures. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to the main office.

We are excited to have basketball and wrestling practice Monday through Thursday this week, and look forward to our first wrestling tournament at Isbell Middle School on Thursday. Basketball games start next week at Valley View Middle School on Wednesday and Thursday.

Thank you as always for being a part of the Saber family! Please reach out with any questions you may have.

Kindly,
Bradley Torti, Principal
Sinaloa Middle School

Good evening Sinaloa Saber Families!

This is Bradley Torti, Principal of Sinaloa Middle School, reaching out with some reminders and updates as we head into the weeks ahead.

Parking lot safety continues to be a major focus for our community. Please remember to drop off and pick up ONLY in the designated green zone in our parking lot, and do not allow your child to run between cars in traffic. If the parking lot on Royal is unavailable or inconvenient for you, please consider alternate pickup and drop off locations. See the attached map for more information and always, please reach out with questions!

The deadline to sign up for the PSAT is September 12th. This test is a great way for parents and students to figure out what to focus on to make sure they are ready for college at the conclusion of high school. It tests the same skills and knowledge as the SAT, PSAT/NMSQT and PSAT 10, in a way that makes sense for middle grades. Contact Sinaloa counseling for more information.

First quarter progress reporting window opens for teachers on Friday, September 6th. Aeries is an important tool for keeping up with your student's progress. Please make sure you have access to and can regularly check Aeries. Check in with your child and be sure to reach out to teachers if you have any questions or concerns as the quarter rolls on. If you have any trouble accessing Aeries, please check our website, our district website, or call or stop into the office for more support.

As always, please reach out with any questions or concerns you may have. Thank you for being a part of the Saber family!

Almost all of our Simi Valley Schools are considered Schools of Choice. (The standing exceptions to School of Choice are Hollow Hills Elementary and Vista Elementary, which are fundamental schools, and Santa Susana High School which is a magnet school.) In some years, schools that are filled to capacity may be closed to School of Choice, but for the 2019-2020 school year, all of our schools except those listed as standing exceptions are able to accept School of Choice applicants. As long as the school is not filled to its capacity with existing students and incoming neighborhood students, students living outside the neighborhood boundaries of a school may apply to enroll in that school, and the school may accept these students until the school is filled to capacity. If there are more applications than there are available spots for interested students, the school will conduct a random lottery to select the number of students they are able to accept.

  • Sinaloa Middle School will be a holding a "Parent Information Night" on Tuesday, January 29th at 6:00 p.m.
  • Sinaloa campus tours will be every Thursday in January and February at 9:00 a.m.
  • Open House & Saber Spotlight will be Thursday, February 21 from 6 to 7:30 p.m.
  • Deadline to apply is Thursday, February 28, 2018. Note: Please call 805-520-6830 if you missed the deadline.

Please come to one of these events and see all of the wonderful things happening at Sinaloa Middle School, a California Gold Ribbon School and California School to Watch!

March 2019

Dear Parents and Guardians:

On March 6 and 7, a very special educational program will take place at and around the campus of Royal High School. The program, "Every 15 Minutes," helps high school students make good decisions about drinking and driving, and encourages young people to make responsible decisions in all areas of their lives.

Beginning in California more than 20 years ago, "Every 15 Minutes" is sponsored by the Royal High School PTSA. Planning for this annual program begins many months in advance and brings together numerous local agencies to carry out this two-day event. Area businesses and organizations donate time and funding to make this effort possible. In Simi Valley, "Every 15 Minutes" alternates each year between Royal High School and Simi Valley High School.

In an effort to drive home the importance of making informed, intelligent choices regarding their decisions, Royal High School juniors and seniors will witness a staged traffic accident that will be set up on Arcane Street on the morning of March 6th. This staged accident includes student actors portraying a student who is a drunk driver and other students who are injured or lose their lives because of this "accident."

Another important part of "Eve1y 15 Minutes" is the removal of one student from a junior or senior class at 15-minute intervals before the staged accident. The removal of these students speaks to the fact that every 15 minutes, someone is killed or injured by a drunk driver.

The parents of all students who directly participate in " Every 15 Minutes" have been involved in both the planning and the delivery phases of the program.

On March 7, an assembly will be held at Royal High School where juniors and seniors will view a videotape of the previous day's events, speak about their experiences as participants in the program, and listen to speakers who have special insight into the tragedies which can occur as the result of making the wrong decisions.

Our purpose in informing families in the Simi Valley Unified School District about the "Every 15 Minutes" program is twofold. Firstly, we want all families in our school community to be aware that a staged accident that will include actual emergency first responders (police, firefighters, ambulance) reenacting the "accident" along Arcane Street on March 6. We do not want to cause any undue anxiety for community members who may be in the area at the time this event takes place. Secondly, having "Every 15 Minutes" take place this month provides a perfect opportunity for parents and guardians (regardless of the ages of their children), to talk together as families about the importance of young people behaving responsibly and making good decisions

We value our partnership with you in your children's education. We also applaud the efforts of all of the agencies and organizations in our community who have pulled together to make this program at Royal High School possible. Please do not hesitate to contact Secondary Education at (805) 306-4500 extension 4206 if you have any questions about Royal High School's "Every 15 Minutes" program.
